Predicting the Rain
As part of our series on sharing interesting facts about our wildlife – including their peculiar habits and down-right bizarre behaviours – this week’s ‘Weird & Wonderful Animal Fact’ is on the Rain Bird.
Otherwise known as Burchell’s Coucal, it is regularly referred to as the Rain Bird because of its ability to predict rain. Zulu’s believe if they hear these birds calling, it will soon rain – something we actually have all learnt to live by due to its accuracy!
It is also a very lazy bird preferring to jump, walk and glide rather than to expend too much energy on flying!

Lovely picture Christian. Hopefully it will rain soon, then we “should” hopefully get some here in Alberton too 🙂
Thanks for sharing these interesting facts. I looked this bird up to hear it’s sound and it has a very unique sound. If he were here he would be singing his little heart out.(Rain, and more rain to come.
